Triple Crown WINNER!!!!!!! Bonus 30 Before 30!

I can't believe it!  American Pharoah has won the Triple Crown!

Here is the race!

I never thought it would happen in my lifetime!!  It seemed so hopeless after so many close calls, but he did it!  He did it on the year I turn thirty, so I'm adding this as a bonus thirty before thirty goal.  If I'd thought it was possible I would have had it on the list lol.

I've been following the Triple Crown races since 1997 when Silver Charm lost the final leg of the Triple Crown by half a length.  I was hooked.  I've watched and waited ever since, hoping this day would happen.  I'm so excited!!

  2. I'm a lot older than you and can remember watching the last Triple Crown won 37 years ago. It's been many yea rs of disappointment until yesterday. I was beginning to believe it would never happen again.

What a wonderful horse and jockey! Wire to wire and so exciting!

  3. Thanks for letting me know - I would have never known about this, it's not in the media in Europe.

I had this weird feeling watching the video of the race that it was staged. No other horse tried to challenge him, and he wasn't pushing himself at all. I just got this dark feeling that they let him win. Is that even possible? No idea. But there was something different about that race.

In reading the NY times about it, I wonder why it's allowed for horses to enter each individual race if they're not attempting a triple crown. It seems unfair that the triple crown contenders have less recovery time. I know nothing about racing *sigh* But it does make the winning of the triple crown all the more heroic, because it was accomplished with 2 strenuous races within the last 5? weeks.

    1. That's what I've been saying for years about letting fresh horses win. I was so frustrated because it felt like there would never be another Triple Crown winner because of it. That's why I'm all the more blown away that American Pharoah did it. I had lost hope of ever seeing a Triple Crown winner in my lifetime.

I kind of got the same feeling you did watching the race that the others didn't really challenge him, but if you look at the speeds American Pharoah was only two seconds off of Secretariat's record, so they were going really fast. Secretariat's record hasn't been broken in forty years (from what I've read, haven't looked it up to see if it's true). I think he was just in a league of his own out there.

Oh and if the racing officials had even a hint of doubt about it being staged they would have investigated it. It's against the rules to hold them back or to try not to win.

  4. It may not have looked like he was challenged, but he was. I've seen some different angles, and on one of the turns he went a little wide and left enough space for a horse to come up on the inside. The horse behind him tried it but Espinoza closed the hole quickly. Then in the stretch at least two horses tried to challenge him on the outside, and their jockeys' went to the whip, they didn't get very close. I think he's the kind of freak that Secretariat was, he has such a huge stride that he can take fewer strides to cover the same ground, and any horse going against him will tire quicker because they're taking more strides. That's why he can lead the whole race against fresher horses. Amazing horse.

    1. And by the way, I'm old enough that I've seen the last 4 Triple Crown winners. I was beginning to worry that I wouldn't see any more.
