Sad News

Wow, I had hoped to post earlier but I had to work all day. Sigh.

Yesterday I got the horrible news that someone shot my mom and dad's dog, Rip, twice with a rifle. :( I am so upset! My parents are devastated. Also, because Rip (Aslan's brother) got out of his pen and was on the neighbor's yard, it technically wasn't illegal, so we can't do anything about it. And this after the same neighbor's dogs tore Rip's ear off and my dad had to spend almost a thousand dollars to get him put back together. :( He never spoke to my neighbor about it because he's an elderly man and has cancer. Now he's not sure if he should try to get some sort of compensation or just leave it alone. If Rip were still alive he wouldn't even worry about it, but since he's dead now . . . I don't know. I'm just so upset and confused over the whole thing. Why did Rip have to find a way out of his pen on that day??

Aside from that one of my coworkers basically stole some of my hours so I had yesterday off (I'm making up my hours elsewhere . . . well almost all of them). I spent most of the day in my feed shed, stacking pallets, removing old hay, burning empty feed bags (been too dry to do it), cleaning up and putting together a tall cabinet so I could store my brushes, buckets, halters, etc up off the ground. It looks so nice in there. I worked for four or five hours straight to keep my mind off of Rip. Now my arms are so sore from hammering and lifting stuff. :)

Well, I'm going to go read my book and forget about everything. Later.

  3. *Sob*! That's so sad. I love dogs so much and even if it's a dog I don't know, I could burst out in tears at any time. I can't imagine if something happened to my Pugsly. :'C I would probably go crazy and do something I would regret (or not regret ;) ) if that happened!

    I'm SO sorry :C

  4. It's the law around here that if a dog is on your property you have the right to shoot it. Normally that only happens if the dog is harassing or killing livestock. No one I know personally has ever shot a dog and I've never known a dog that was shot so it doesn't happen often. The thing is the neighbor doesn't have livestock!! I have no idea why they shot him. :(

  5. I just looked it up to verify and apparently it is no longer legal to kill a dog on your property. I think the city has to do it . . . regardless we can't prove who did it . . . I don't know what to do.

  6. That's upsetting. I'm sorry for you and your parents' loss. There was a case around here in which a neighbor let his neighbor's dog loose, because he was sick of its barking. He then loaded it into his truck, drove it out to the sand pits and shot it there. I don't know what came of it.

  8. Oh that's so sad.

I only wanted to shoot a dog once that kept coming onto our property, a few years ago. Especially after it dug into our barn and tore open our rabbit cage...dragged the rabbit out and ripped it to bits! It was my son's special pet that he had raised from a kit and was 4 years old!
Instead of shooting the &*!#@ dog, we decided to just capture it and call Animal Control. We had an idea of who the dog belonged to, but when we contacted several of our neighbors down the road, they wouldn't claim it. Animal Control came and picked up the dog because it had no collar or ID.

But just a week later, that same dog was back out on our property AGAIN...but wearing a collar and tags! UGH!
This time, it had squeezed under the fence into our llama paddock and those llamas went after that dog like they were going to kill it. I rescued the dog as it screamed for mercy. We removed the dog's collar and tags and chased it off with rocks!

We've seen it wandering the roads since then, but it won't take one step on our property now.

I'm sorry your parents' dog was killed.

  9. That is terrible. Your parents must be devastated. I think they should talk to their neighbor. Nothing can replace their beloved pet, but they deserve some answers.

  12. Oh, that is just tragic. What an awful, awful person that shot the dog.

If you could get the bullets, you may be able to see if they came from your neighbors gun, but I'm sure the whole process would be complicated and expensive. Of course, that is what they would do if a human was shot.
