A New Roof!

It took three months (and I officially hate banks now), but we finally got our new roof!! I love it. :) We went with a metal roof because it was cheaper (since they didn't have to pull shingles or redeck), will last longer, has an energy star rating and looks great too. :) I just wish it would rain now so we can see what it'll sound like. I love the sound of rain on a metal roof. Now the bank is insisting we have 60% of the repairs done before we can have the second third of the money (and the roofer hasn't even been paid in full, makes no sense to me), so we have to fix the hen house, tool shed and fence before we can get the money to finish paying the roofer. Then we're probably going to have to pay for the horse barn out of pocket before they will send the last third of the insurance money. Like I said, I really hate banks right now. So it'll probably be another three months before I get my new barn. :(

However check out this gorgeous roof. Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of the ugly green paint that the previous owner put on the grout. I can't decide if I want to sand blast it or just repaint it a different color . . . oh and sorry for the mess. :)

So what do you think? The color matches our old barn (probably go with red on the new one too). I was thinking of staining the wood around the windows and the supports to the front porch a dark brown color. I'd probably paint the green part above and below the windows the same color. The grout I can't decide if I want it a natural color or if I want to paint it dark for the contrast with the light stone. Any ideas guys? I'm not known for my decorating abilities hehe.

  1. Oh boy, I'm no decorator, my taste is deffinately only in my mouth... I love how it looks so far though. I might be inclined to have a lighter grout maybe. I hesitate to give an opinion though.
It must be incredibly frustrating to have to get your homestead fixed in increments like that. I hope the roofer is patient. What a pain in the butt!

  2. I like that roof. I agree with your thoughts of making the wood darker and I would make the grout a lighter natural color to make the stones stand out. Looks good!

  3. What a relief it must be to get that roof taken care of. The roof I have to replace on my mother's house is Spanish tile, but this time I have to have wire mesh installed on the openings to keep the birds out since they are what break the tiles and cause the leaks in the first place. I also have to get someone to caulk around all the windows, because they are leaking. I'm hoping the money will come in before it starts raining.

  5. Nice! A metal roof is a good choice! Aside from its durability, it's also fire-resistant. It's the most resistant of all roofing types. Plus, it reflects radiant heat from the sun! It's an advantage during summertime! However, a metal roof really creates noise when it rains. Have you heard experienced that? :D

  6. Adam, I actually haven't had a problem with the noise at all. The metal roof was put on over my normal shingle roof, which I think is why it's so quiet. It was cheaper to do it that way and they made sure there is plenty of air flow so the shingles and decking won't be damaged by moisture. :) We love it.

  7. I love the look of your new roof. What’s good about metal roofing is that it’s not high maintenance, at same time it also has a long lifespan and is highly resistant against even the harshest weather, even with little maintenance. Anyway, take care of your roof!

  8. I do hope that your insurance policy will help you with your house repairs. Having one will make things easier, especially on the financial side. And some of them can recommend trusted builders and contractors to help you. Anyway, the roof looks perfect, and the color definitely goes well with the house design. [Barry Bates]

  9. What a beautiful home! The color of the metal roof is the perfect complement for the stone walls. They just go together so nicely! Your idea of painting the wood around the windows would be nice. Dark brown would be a beautiful contrast to the light stone. I can’t wait to see it.
