** The picture is really bad. It was too dark to not use flash, but flash looks horrible. He is really butt high right now (more than it appears in this picture because his left rear foot is forward) so I'm betting he's starting another growth spurt. He's been looking so gangly lately. Height: 14.3¾hh
Height Gain: Only a quarter of an inch this time. So much for him making 15hh this month lol. Oh well, he'll get there. There's no hurry.
Weight: The weight tape still said 810lbs. Hmm.
Weight Gain: I'm not convinced the weight tape is accurate, but it said he didn't gain any weight at all this month. It did finally get really cold this month so I guess it could be that, since he's using more energy to stay warm. I'm not too worried about it. He looks great and that's what matters. :)
Progress: Ugh, I didn't really get anything productive done this month. I did work on some desensitizing and went walking, but that's about it. It was cold this month and I've been busy so I'm not too worried about it.
Goals: I still want to work on softening exercises, specifically yielding. I want to do more walking. I want to start clicker training again, but that will depend on how cold it is. Operating a clicker is difficult when its cold! :) That's all for this month.
He's looking happy and great condition, so don't worry about the clicker. I'm exactly the same in that when it's cold I do less, I like to feel my fingers lol! :)

I have trouble with the treat delivery too--especially if I'm wearing gloves.
One thing that can help is to use a mouth click. The mouth click takes awhile to get the hang of, but is really helpful once you get the hang of it. Just practice it a lot while you're doing other stuff (driving, watching TV, etc.) until you get where you can reliably make a sound that sounds fairly close to a mechanical clicker.

ReplyDeleteI did clicker training one winter when it was too cold to ride (I only got as far as the horses looking away for a treat and standing without moving at liberty). As in the above comment, I just made a noise to substitute for a clicker. That way both hands are free too. Any sound works as long as the horse associates it with getting a treat and it's a sound you can make easily and consistently.
Unfortunately I used to say 'good boy' to Rogo and give him carrots or apples when he'd go forward on the lunge when first starting. To this day he hesitates in what ever he's doing as soon as I say good boy (maybe there's a carrot?). So I have to remember to praise in some other way if I don't want to wreck the rhythm :)
Chrome is looking great! I love his cool colors all coming through! Enzo is now 15 hands at the withers and 15'1 at the butt at 18 months old. But Chrome does have Arabian in him. So Enzo should be larger in general. I have not put a weigh tape on, but he was at 850 pounds before. I am sure it's a bit more for sure. But Chrome is looking great!!! Keep up the great work!!!
